Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice for Baking
When I’m in the mood to bake, I’m always glad to have a jar of homemade pumpkin pie spice in the cabinet ready to go. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not always in the mood to bake. That often gets confused with the always present desire to consume homemade baked goods. Ha! Really, though, there are days when hauling all the items for my favorite recipes seem too daunting to deal with for the fleeting enjoyment of something made from scratch.

Having all my favorite spices combined into one small jar is so much easier to haul out than taking out each individual spice.

Convenience. It’s the reason why I prefer to make a jar of homemade pumpkin pie spice mix.
I’m one of those people who loves and thinks about all things Fall * Autumn * Pumpkin all year long and adding just a hint of pumpkin spice to things like smoothies and hot cocoa is a small way to enjoy this homemade spice mix.

Tools You Might Need to Make Your Own Spice Mixes
I have this set of whisks that make mixing so easy in small spaces. I also use them for cups of tea, cocoa, and to mix individual mug cakes, too.
These are perfect for getting those spices into jars.
How Long Do Spices Last
There’s this spice store near our home that sells spices in bulk. It’s a convenient way for me to restock my spice cabinet because of the amount of baking and cooking we do here at Cove Kitchen. I normally don’t have to worry about the shelf life of spices because I use them up fairly quickly especially during the fall season.
The question I am often asked, though, is how long do spices last? According to McCormick, spices like ground nutmeg, cloves, ginger can last 2-4 years. A simple look and smell of the spice can indicate whether or not it should be replace;
Does it have a strong smell? Spices should have have a strong, potent smell. If it doesn’t, toss it.
Is it rich in color? Spices will lose their rich vibrant color over time. If the color is faded and the smell is faint, let it go.
How to Store Spices
When I buy my spices in bulk, they come in clear plastic containers. I prefer to keep all spices in glass jars with well fitting lids. Keep spices stored away from heat, light, and air.
