Pumpkin Spice Cocoa Bombs

Making hot cocoa bombs is a fun activity to do when it’s cold out and you want to stay cozy indoors. My six year old nephew helped me make these and he did an amazing job creating the candy shells-better than I did, I think!

Fun Fillings for Hot Cocoa Bombs

Fill the cocoa bombs with whatever tasty toppings you normally enjoy with a hot cup of cocoa. Here’s what I like on my hot chocolate:

  • Pumpkin Spice Hot Cocoa Mix
  • Crushed peppermint
  • Toffee pieces
  • Tiny marshmallows
  • Mini chocolate chips (these are cinnamon chocolate chips)
  • Candy canes
  • Whoppers candies
  • Truffles
  • Or, any melt-y candy that will fit in your mold

Tools You Will Need to Make Cocoa Bombs

  • I purchased my cocoa bomb mold at a local cake & candy supply store in my old hometown but you can find cocoa bomb molds on Amazon.
  • I found using a small SPOON made spreading the melted chocolate so much easier than a knife or offset spatula.
  • Cake decorating bags make decorating the tops of the cocoa bombs pretty and professional!

Types of Chocolate Used for Hot Cocoa Bombs

My favorite chocolate to use in most candy making is Ghirardelli Melting Wafers.

Our local cake & candy supply store has SO MANY FLAVORS of candy melts.

I’ve found the main difference between regular chocolate (like melted chocolate chips or chocolate candy bars) and candy melts is that chocolate can be reheated and reused more easily. Once candy melts harden, it is more difficult to remelt and reuse.

Adding a tiny bit of shortening to the candy melts can make the process easier.

How to Make Cocoa Bomb Shells

Step 1: Melt chocolate according to package instructions.

Step 2: Place a spoonful of melted chocolate into a cavity and use the back of the spoon to spread around the entire mold and up the sides.

PRO-TIP: Make sure the edges on top are even. This makes assembling the cocoa bombs easier.

Step 3: Place candy molds in the freezer for about 5-7 minutes.
Step 4: Pop out the candy shells. I like to place them in cupcake liners so they don’t move around.
Step 5: Fill one set of candy shells with hot chocolate fillings.

Step 6: To seal the cocoa bombs: heat an empty plate in the microwave. Pick up an empty shell and place it rim-side-down on the warm plate to melt the chocolate just a tiny bit. Place the shell over the candy-filled shell to seal.
Alternatively, I used a knife to add some melted chocolate around the rim and sealed them that way. It was a bit sloppier and didn’t look quite as neat; but it worked!

Step 7: Decorate the tops of the pumpkin spice cocoa bombs with more melted chocolate. Place melted chocolate into a piping bag and drizzle over the cocoa bomb. Sprinkle the cocoa bomb with the topping that is inside the bomb (makes it easy for everyone to get their fave hot cocoa combo!)

PRO-TIP: If you don’t have a piping bag, place melted chocolate in a resealable plastic sandwich bag and snip off the corner.
