Step by Step Instructions for How to Make Wrapped Rope Pumpkins
Step 1: Gather all supplies and remove packaging and tags. Measure and tape the thick cotton rope in the middle of where you will cut the rope to prevent fraying on both ends.
Here are the lengths that were cut to create the Pumpkin Trio.
- Tall Pumpkin: one 10โณ and one 12โณ length.
- Small Pumpkin: one 8โณ, one 9.5โณ and one 11โณ length.
- Wide Pumpkin one 6โณ, one 7.5โณ, one 9โณ, and one 11โณ length.
Step 2: Line up and dry-fit all the sections of the three pumpkins on your work surface. Number the section of each pumpkin with the permanent marker so you can keep track of all the lengths of the rope.
Step 3: Line up the rope sections from the wide pumpkin from smallest to largest on your work surface. Place a small line of hot glue on the end of the smallest rope, place the end of the yarn into the bond, and then let it cool. Begin wrapping the rope tightly with the dark orange yarn.
Step 4: Continue to wrap each length of cotton rope with the orange yarn. Keep the yarn tight, and the rows close together,r so you do not see any white rope. At the very end of each rope, cut the yarn and pull it through the second loop, then secure it with a small dot of hot glue. Starting with the most petite length, fold it in half, apply a thin line of hot glue to the center of the yarn-covered rope, and hold it together until the glue cools. Repeat with the remaining lengths of yarn-covered rope until the pumpkin is complete.
Step 5: Carefully remove the tape from the ends of the cotton rope with scissors. Gently comb (or brush) out the ends of the cotton rope to create a lovely fringe. Trim the fringe evenly with scissors. Repeat the above process to create the Tall Pumpkin and the Small Pumpkin.
Step 6:Next, create stems and leaves once all three pumpkins are complete. Download, print, and cut out the stems and leaf patterns. Trace three leaves on olive green felt and three stems on both medium and dark brown felt. Create polka dots on one leaf using bright green acrylic craft paint and a new pencil eraser. Create a plaid pattern on the second and third leaves by dabbing vertical and horizontal lines with a flat paintbrush. Glue the medium and dark brown felt stems together. Attach the stems and leaves to the pumpkins with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Optional, Step 7: Download and print Jack-O-Lantern face patterns. Roughly cut out designs with scissors and attach them to black felt with straight pins. Cut out all features with scissors. Attach felt Jack-O-Lantern features to the reverse side of the pumpkins with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Change up these DIY-wrapped rope pumpkins to fit your home decor simply by changing the color of the rope. Or, create them in shades of white and green for the perfect topper for a gift bag or present instead of a bow.
